Autumn is Just Around the Corner!

With Back- to -School and Back- to -Routine coming up, there are so many mixed emotions at this time of year. Sadness that the holidays are over. Relief that there is less to plan and organize. Excitement for this new chapter, and/or stress and worry about what is ahead. Throw in the changing weather and all that it brings (including potential illness), by mid-Sept many of us feel the emotional exhaustion setting in.

As an Acupuncturist, for all of the above (and more), I always say, “There’s a point for that!”

And truly, there is.

Acupuncture is Wonderful at Curbing Strong Emotions:

Because acupuncture helps calm the nervous system and lowers stress hormones, it is a wonderful tool to help calm anxiety and bring emotions into balance. There are several acupuncture/acupressure points around the ear that can really help with stress and anxiety. I enjoy using ear seeds (small seeds or metallic balls that are attached to a piece of adhesive tape) on these ear points. They add light pressure throughout the week and can help prolong the effects of the acupuncture treatment. Ask about ear seeds the next time you’re in!

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are great for boosting Immunity:

There are actually specific acupuncture points on the body that encourage a strong immune system! Herbs and herbal formulas are great at keeping the seasonal bugs away. Chinese Medicine recommends certain lifestyle choices during the autumn to keep you healthy and strong. These include: covering the back of your neck and your ankles (think-light scarves, hoodies, and socks with your sandals/shoes) whenever you’re outside; add pears to your daily diet, think of ways to incorporate more cinnamon and ginger as well; take time daily to engage in chest opening exercises and deep breathing. Small little habits and changes can have a big impact!

In addition, both acupuncture and cupping can be very helpful in the recovery of seasonal colds and flus- especially if the lungs are involved. Contact Erika if you’d like to know more about this!

Acupuncture is Great for Cognitive Health!

With heavy classes and exams on the horizon, it’s good to know that acupuncture can help clear the cob-webs, improve concentration, and potentially enhance memory. Again, because acupuncture helps to lower stress, less stress can equal better mental performance overall. Obviously, acupuncture is not going to replace a good old-fashioned study session, but it may just supercharge it!

Acupuncture is more than just personal care (though it is that!) or “me time” (which it can be too!),it is part of a medicine system that seeks to prevent illness first and then treat the root of illness if it arrives. Don’t forget to check in, be proactive, and take care of yourself this fall!
