Year of the Fire Horse

Happy Lunar New Year!

2026 welcomes the year of the Fire Horse. If you felt at all stuck or undecided last year, this year is predicted to bring movement and clarity. Words like: “Faster”, “Louder”, “Passion”, and “Energy” are being used to describe our motivation, decisions, career advancement, and relationships. For many, these descriptions will bring a feeling of inspiration and renewal, while others may feel a sense of overwhelm and exhaustion. Regardless of the feelings the upcoming year evokes, TCM offers some valid tips and tricks to get you through in the best shape possible.

As a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), my focus goes straight to the “Fire” part of “Fire Horse”, as that element is one that I deal with regularly in my practice. Fire relates to the Heart and Small Intestine. It encompasses joy and laughter, controls the tongue, governs sweat, and desires growth. The “Heart” part of the fire element brings mental acuity and emotional stability. Whereas the Small Intestine side of Fire is responsible for digestion (no surprises there!) and interestingly, discernment.

As we know, a fire that is contained is both stunning and useful. However, a fire left unchecked can leave devastation in its wake (especially if it’s been dragged by a wild horse!). Adding some gentle routines into everyday life that balance and ground can ensure this voracious year yields beauty and not ashes.

Here are 3 suggestions from TCM that will help you accomplish this:

1. Sleep!

When everything is moving fast, stopping to recharge is essential. Sleep is so important for hormone balance, weight management, brain health, and more. It is during the dark hours of the night that our body is able to literally and figuratively cool down, and regenerate. Do your best to put screens away an hour before you plan to sleep, and try to be in bed before midnight.

2. Focus on Digestive Health

The small intestine is an integral part of gut health. Keeping the gut healthy actually helps keep your mind healthy as well.  Avoid foods that create “heat”, like overly spicy flavours, greasy and sugary foods. Incorporate cooling foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, pears, and green tea.

3. Reduce Stress

We all know we need to do this, but sometimes figuring out how is tricky.

Choose some activities that help you slow down.

  • Try Qi Gong, Tai Qi, Yoga, or other stretching exercises one or two days a week.
  • Go for a walk
  • Stand in the sunshine for 5 mins
  • Stop drinking coffee (or other highly caffeinated drinks) by 10:00 am.
  • Get a good night’s sleep… sounding repetitive?!
  • Go for Acupuncture! Acupuncture is a fantastic way to help your nervous system calm down and function as it should.

Whether this year is, in fact, fast and furious for you, or rather the opposite- I hope that you are able to grow, to feel joy, and to find a rhythm of wellness that works for you.

All the Best in 2026! I look forward to treating you soon!
